Why your Tone is Important for Engaging with your Audience

Your tone establishes emotional connection between your brand and your audience. It’s how you convey your message, the overall themes of your content and how you speak to your audience.

So what tone is best for your brand?

There are four main tone dimensions used in any content,

  • humour

  • formality

  • respectfulness

  • enthusiasm

Every other characteristic of tone will usually fit into a subcategory of these, or work as an accent.

You should determine your tone based on your brand’s aesthetic. As you want to connect with your audience on a deeper level. You don’t want to be too formal, but you also want them to take you seriously, so too casual is also not the answer either. You need to find a balance which suits your identity.

You’re talking to a person, so your content should cater to a person.

It’s a good idea to use a combination of traits to build and layer your tone, as this will help to elevate your message, build a connection with your audience and add depth to your content. Setting the right tone for your brand, is an important step and should be established early in your business, as it will be used across all of your content.

Not only does your tone show how you feel about the message you are presenting, but it indicates how your audience should feel about it too.

Are you being super passionate and enthusiastic? Is your tone pumping up your audience, empowering them, exciting them to see your content or products the way you do, as something amazing and something they need to have?

As fun as this can be, there is a downside to going too far in that one direction, and it can have an adverse effect. If someone doesn’t like that energy, they are more likely to leave your webpage… now before you get disheartened and change your tone - understand that your content won’t be for everybody, but it will be perfect for your targeted audience. They’re the ones who will get fired up and be just as passionate as your brand is.

Once you know who your audience is, you should be able to create the best tone to communicate with them.

All in all, your tone is how you present yourself, it’s how you speak to your audience. It’s the level of formality used when presenting your ideas. It’s the imagery you use, and even the audio you use to accompany your information.

Want your audience to be excited? Sad? Fired up? This is done via tone, and if implemented correctly can build trust and establish a deeper connection with your audience.

So make sure yours is working for you, not against you.

Until next time, Happy Writing!
