Sell the Benefits, not just the Product

Most business owners often want to know why no one is buying their product. They know it’s a great product, they know it will help their customers, but for one reason or another, their product just doesn’t sell. They pay for advertising, and still nothing… what are they doing wrong?

Then they begin to self-doubt, maybe they’re not cut out for this, maybe their business and products aren’t as good as they think.

Has this happened to you?

If it has, I want you to stop. Stop the negativity and stop doubting yourself.

There could be many reasons why you aren’t having success selling your products.

Starting with this very simple one…

… are you selling the product or the benefits?

What I mean by this, is how will your product effect your customers life, once they have your product. What benefits will they gain from using or having it? Why is your product different or better than that of your competitors? This is what you need to show your audience.

People buy generally for one of 3 reasons.

  • Health

  • Wealth

  • Love

It really is that simple.

So tell me, where do your products fit into these categories? If they don’t then you are already at a disadvantage. It’s not impossible, just harder. If you’re not sure, contact me and I’ll help you work it out, so that you can start boosting your sales.

When selling your product, you need to target your customer’s pain points, and show how your product will relieve their pain.

Example:

Imagine your product is a “coffee” scented candle.

Do you feel tired? Is your afternoon turning into a slump? What if I told you a candle could do the heavy lifting? Want to wake up energised and ready to start your day? Want the energy boost in the afternoon, without the caffeine? Want to stimulate your senses with a delicious aroma? This candle does all that and more.

Now I’m someone who already has a lot of candles, but I would likely want to buy that candle for the benefits it offers.

Meaning I would become the targeted audience. The benefits I listed are the pain points that the product targets.

  • I often write all day long on my laptop, and I usually need an afternoon pick-me-up.

  • I love burning candles.

  • Who wouldn’t love to have extra energy?

  • The caffeine boost without the negative side effects.

Even if I wasn’t specifically looking to buy a candle, chances are if I saw the advertisement I would want to buy, because as a writer, these benefits appeal to me and my lifestyle.

This product would rank under the “health” category because it would be targeting my energy, improving my lifestyle and overall my health and well-being.

So if you are struggling to get those sales, look back at your products and see where they fit into the 3 core categories. How are you selling them? What are their benefits? What pain points do they address?
